הסיפור מתחיל כשבן ציון, המכונה איתמר בן אב"י, בכורו של אליעזר בן יהודה, מחדש השפה העברית, התאהב בלאה אבושדיד, היפיפייה, שבחורים מיוחסים רבים חיזרו אחריה. למרות היותו עיתונאי, בלשן, סופר ומשורר, דחתה אותו משפחתה הספרדית העשירה משום שהיה אשכנזי עני. מאבקו העיקש של איתמר במשך שנים למימוש אהבתו ללאה, ממשיך את סיפור ילדותו והתבגרותו, כפי שסופר בספר, הבכור לבית אב"י. ספריה של דבורה עומר, נקראים על ידי בני נוער רבים, וזכו לפרסים בארץ ובחו"ל.
